Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

A fabulous Sharon spotting in Seattle, hometown of Jimi Hendrix.

Mere coincidence?

I think not!

A Forgotten Memory Remembered

An unremembered event, probably. The infant would be at least 94 years old, the boy might be over 100. What's left of this glorious summer's day, other than this photo?

The last living veteran of World War I died last year, so the soldier and sailors are certainly gone. There might be some of the clothes still around—a uniform may have been saved.  A better chance of survival would be afforded the mandolin—an instrument which could conceivably be the very same one which now resides in Flippist World Headquarters!

The resort building behind the group might still be there, but its uninspired architecture and cheap construction make that seem unlikely.  But the lake probably still exists, as well as the sun and the grass and all those other things which can turn a fine summer day into a memory for a lifetime.

Or, in this case, two lifetimes.

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Returned from Seattle late last night; a fun trip (more photos to come) with lots of greenery:

This morning, back in Minneapolis, we were greeted with this rude homecoming:

Mini-hiatus

I'm off for a short trip to the great Pacific Northwest. I'll be back late next week with more "adventures" but until I am I'll have periodical updates (backdates?) from Luella Busch's fabulous time machine.

In the meantime, if you are looking for something thought-provoking, I recommend this recent post from Tavi Gevinson's great Rookie Magazine.

Ras El Hanout and Red Palm Oil

My new kitchen buddies. The Ras El Hanout is very aromatic, sort of like a mild cinnamon curry. It tends to get lost in cooked dishes, I usually add it just before serving. The Red Palm Oil has been touted on TV by Dr. Oz as a "miracle fat" which I suspect is just a way to sell supplements. Be that as it may, it is useful in cooking. Fairly bland, but it stands up to heat and imparts everything with an attractive yellow/orange glow. Be careful, however, as it will stain anything it touches. Together, these two are easy to use and add some flair to your usual dishes without being overdramatic.

Will FITK now be turned into a foodie blog?

No, but you might see more culinary entries as I have a lot more time to spend in the kitchen now.

The first Social Security check should arrive in three weeks.
