a child, a woman

thirteen with the body of a twenty year-old
last year she was hanging out at the dairy queen with the girls
laughing and carefree
this year she returns, but not with the girls; the boys seek her out
sullen and wary
she could use just a little more time to be a girl
she'll be a woman the rest of her life
on the first day of summer
spring is forgotten
