East Jesus
A few miles west of Niland, California, is a squatter village known as Slab City.
“Built” upon the foundation slabs of old barracks left behind from an abandoned Marine base, this conglomeration of trailers and trash is home to a several dozen refugees from civilization. There is a YouTube channel devoted to it, TMI. One area of this domain, however, has been shaped into a more formal “outsider art” installation and has been named East Jesus.
Some of the art barely rises above the level of a midden:
Nevertheless, some works are elegant and whimsical:
Decorated dead vehicles are prominently featured:
While an odd art-encrusted tower overlooks the area:
A wall of dead TVs has been reincarnated as a new medium of communication:
Is this Barbie art car is celebrating sisterhood, freedom and/or nudity?
Tomorrow: Slab City Library…

One of Sue Grafton's earlier alphabet series mystery thrillers features Slab City. All her stuff is excellent IMHO.

Oro ~ I might check that out.

"G is for gumshoe" is the novel featuring SC. Protagonist Kinsey Millhone (PI) is unique. I knew Grafton before she started the mystery series;she was writing for Hollywood then. Impressive, neat lady!

Oro ~ I finished "G", Grafton really did her homework, her descriptions of the area around The Salton Sea are spot-on.

I read about it in that book, "Into the Wild."
