Thanks for the link, Batty. My grandfather was born in 1896 north of Akureyri. These photos give me a sense of that time.

Cellar Door ~ Have you read Independent People by Halldór Laxness? Although I think the early settlers in North Dakota (Giants in the Earth by Ole Rolvaag) was harder.
