San Francisco - Part IV

North Beach

The northernmost part of San Francisco is the (somewhat loosely defined) North Beach neighborhood, including many of the piers as well as what was an old Italian neighborhood.

I’m not going to try to define it, I’ll just offer some of the more memorable scenes I managed to capture over the course of a couple of visits.

While most of the sea lions hang out at Pier 39 (see below), but there are a few independent thinkers, like our friend at the right, who prefer to bask alone at Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Maritime National Park visitor center has this breathtaking 10 foot tall rotating Fresnel lens beacon from a local historical lighthouse among its artifacts:

The area’s Italian heritage is memorialized in this tiled doorway floor in the famous City Lights Bookstore:

A small Italian bakery had this old cash register in its window:

And the birthplace of Francis Ford Coppola’s film empire is located here as well:

Took a hike along the W.R. Hearst State Beach; I was astounded at the size of the bull elephant seals. They were the size of small submarines! Sometimes if you bark/croak at them they'll reply in kind. :)

There were a couple of hundred of them at pier 39, but most were cows.
