San Francisco - Part V

Chinese Lunar New Year

As chance would have it, the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations landed in the middle of our stay with a two-day street fair and the famous parade that snaked around Union Square:

In case you weren’t aware of it, we are now in the Year of the Dog:

Various organizations were represented with colorful pageantry:

And what would a San Francisco parade be without princesses on cable cars?

Or fantastic floats?

And feats of derring-do?

You sure got to take in a lot of interesting stuff! Bowie's Diamond Dogs slipped into my mind while looking at the parade. The parade didn't have a post-apocalyptic theme, thank goodness.
The parade was totally unexpected, the whole trip was a great trip for surprises. I've barely begun to cover it in the blog, I'll be writing about it from time to time in the future, I'm sure.
How fun!
When I was a kid, the 49ers won the Super Bowl, and I remember seeing Joe Montana on TV, standing on the streetcar in the victory parade, waving just like that lady. I thought it was SO COOL that they let the 49ers use the streetcar!
The cable car the women were on was converted-it had tires and a motor so it could drive on the parade route. Tres chic!
