Óx Revisited

This beguiling alcove on Laugavegur hides a delectable secret:
Press the lion’s tongue on the wall, state your intent and, once you’ve been buzzed in, traverse a long hallway and down a flight of stairs to Amma Don, a stylish mid-century-modern apartment where congenial hosts await to fulfill your every gustatory desire:
An ordinary bookcase hides another secret:
Óx, a secret restaurant where you will be wined, dined and sublimed for the next four hours:
The exotic tasting courses are magically prepared before your eyes:
The Óx team’s efforts ensures success:
And a curtain call acknowledges the patron’s ovation:
This was my second trip to this legendary restaurant.

The first time I was a timid thrill-seeker, this time I was a seasoned gourmand. As we chatted over prosecco awaiting for the tasting to begin I assured my fellow patrons that yes, it is an experience worthy of the hype. After we entered the restaurant proper our half of the U-shaped table consisted of a young woman from California with her spouse (who was from New Zealand), a professional couple from London (she was in marketing, he worked in ‘the city’) and a professional couple from Singapore (the other diners were too far away for me to interact with. Table talk was lively, I had a particularly intense conversation with the Singaporean representative from AMD and his wife, who ran an optical clinic (I shared my macular degeneration prevention strategies with her). He was interested in my retirement income and magic mushrooms, not necessarily in that order! We coasted on, drinking til well past ten when I left with a quote from Laxness.

Óx Redux

After nine trips to Iceland over 24 years I felt that I had begun reaching a point of diminishing returns.

No hard feelings, Iceland, but I had spent a third of my life obsessing over that rock in the North Atlantic. It was time for a change, and it worked. I’ve mostly stopped ruminating on things Icelandic with one notable exception: Dinner at Óx, a Michelin star restaurant located behind a bookcase in an underground speakeasy at 55 Laugavegur. I've been pretty consistent in my resolution to refrain from posting about Iceland this year and although this restaurant is located in Reykjavík, it really exists in its own little world of seventeen patrons and eight staff all around a U-shaped bar in a room with modest decor reminiscent of a country kitchen.

On a foodie level, it's impossible to fault any of the 20+ items I enjoyed over the four hour experience. I’ve had a few other small plates that were more intense (at Dill, another Michelin Star restaurant in Reykjavík), but never have I been wowed with such a long string of dishes. The wine pairings were also excellent (although the cocktails were a bit much for my delicate constitution.)

The thing that put it over the top was the interaction with the four main chefs, their two helpers, the sommelier, and the bartender. More than just dinner, it was a fully-realized stage-play. Obviously, at 66000ISK (about $460 USD) the patrons really wanted to be there; they too became part of the production. I was the oldest person there (by at least twenty years) but felt welcome and not the least bit invisible (as is common when I go out in public.) After the meal was over I had to leave (to catch a concert) forgoing yet another round of drinks. One of the chefs (at the left in the above picture) saw me out and was interested in my reaction.

I wrote about this at length last year, but the memory of that night persists in my reveries.

Iceland 2025 — Day Five

Another brilliant day—sunny, warm, and again, little wind! I actually managed to get up before 10:00. Outside Vesturbæjarlaug I took a close-up of the fish embrace statue I posted about yesterday:
I’d like to know the story behind it. The sun was so intense I was virtually blinded when crossing Hringbraut on the way back from the pool.
I spotted this parking meter just outside Hólavallagarður cemetery, looking like it was an escaped tombstone:
The rest of the week is forecast to be fair and mild too. I got some more groceries this afternoon; I was out of food and coffee! I really should dine out for at least one fancy meal but it will be difficult to find the time after Wednesday when Airwaves begins. I wonder if there is an opening at Óx  on Tuesday?

I received a very strange eMail today from Icelandair with an odd offer:
What the flugfélög?

They want me to shorten my trip by a day or two for a measly $100 credit? Cutting short a trip I had paid for months ago, a trip that I had planned for very specific dates and had already paid for concert tickets and lodging? Leaving a day early would mean forfeiting $250, leaving two days early would mean losing over $500. Is there a problem with my regular return flight? Did they overbook passengers returning from Iceland Airwaves? Will air traffic controllers completely stop working in the U.S. that day? Time will tell. See my previous post about this trip, item #13

For dinner I had mixed veg, tortellini con prosciutto di parma, maribo cheese, Belgian Chocolate (cheaper than at home!) and a fine local beverage:
It would have cost at least $50 in a restaurant here (please don’t judge me by the Kókó Mjólk).

After dinner I went back to the pool, just as it was getting dark:
A different clientele, mostly families relaxing before supper. The crowd began to thin out around 19:00 and I moseyed home with an almost full moon shining down upon the city:

Amma Don og Óx

My destination was Amma Don, a Reykjavík speakeasy at 55 Laugavegur.
There was no signage, just a graffiti-covered entryway with a brass lion on the wall. The lion’s tongue sticks out and when I depressed it a woman voice asked of my intentions. I passed muster and was buzzed in where I walked down a blank hallway to a set of industrial stairs that led down to a small room about 12 meters square. On one wall was a carved wooden door. Going through it I found myself transported to a 50s retro-styled lounge where I was greeted by a young woman dressed in black and shown to a low table that had my name on a card at my place. After sitting down in a comfortable chair my companions for the evening began to filter in, I was given a glass of champagne and vintage book by Halldór Laxness (which contained the drinks menu—if the champagne weren’t enough.) A man from California was seated next to me, we were the only singletons. Pleasantries were exchanged, and an amuse bouche arrived to tickle my palate. After cocktails we were led to a bookcase to the right of the bar:
The bookcase swung open and we entered Óx, a Michelin star restaurant. The seventeen of us found seats around the horseshoe-shaped table:
A rotating group of chefs in aprons explained and prepared the food in front of us, while the sommelier (in a suit) explained the history of each vintage:
The courses came in due course, each chosen to reflect an Icelandic food heritage: potato + miso + rutabaga; laufabrauð + juniper + hangiköt; lamb + butter; caviar + choux + duck eggs; chicken liver + red beets + red currant. The scallop + dulse + fennel pollen was a miracle:
The list went on: halibut + rhubarb + fig leaf; shrimp + tomatoes + habanero; salmon + quinoa + sea urchin; rutabaga + almond + brown butter; geothermal rye bread + butter + trout; monkfish + yeast + dulse; quail + unagi + unagi. Then came the lamb—fresh—never frozen (“only good at this time of year”) + feykir + beetroot:
Wasabi leaf + crémant + pumpkin seeds?:
With ten courses of wine and drinks it all became a blur: Bilberry + marscapone + roses; sea buckthorn + carrot + ginger?  I do remember them preparing the main dessert: beignet + Omnon (chocolate) + malt:
Ooooh…
One of them asked me how it was, I answered “Þetta er allt að koma“ which impressed him greatly. After a couple more “desserts” (chicken skin? + sea salt + liquorice; toffee + barley) and a shot of their own spiced liqueur, it was over and they all took a bow:
Thus ended my three and a half hour Michelin star restaurant dining experience. It is hard to compare to a regular (or even a superlative) restaurant meal. It may be a bit too much, but once (or twice) in a lifetime is just right.
